Heads  are demagnetized. You don't goes to find another equal unit !!!! TOTALLY SERVICED !!!!!   •       Completely cleaned interior /  exterior •       Checked and cleaned  all knobs/switchs, function, and VU meters  •       Cleaned and lubricated all switches with De-Ox-It. •       Adjusted and aligned Volume section for play/record. •       Cleaned faceplate  and all knobs. •       Adjusted and demagnetized all heads .       Checked  input/output.   CAUTION:  Many AKAI'S for sell do not have the "CAPSTAM SPEED SLEEVE" - the chromed bolt that changes the speed and do not exist for sell separately!! This model operates on two tape speeds: 7-1/2 ips and 3-3/4 ips. The Tape Speed is determined by the size of the capstam. For 3-3/4 ips, unscrew capstam cap by turning it counterclockwise and remove the outer capstam. For the 7-1/2 ips, use the outer capstam. See the capstam in my pictures. It is located in the center of device close the pinch roller. We tested this AKAI 4000DB  = FANTASTIC !!!!Has a wonderful and pure SOUND !!!! It does not have speakers. You must connect it to a stereo receiver or an amplifier. This machine records and plays back with excellent fidelity and frequency response. The Tape Recorder is looking great  even if it has more than 25 years and it works perfectly! The faceplate looks great! All the mechanical and electronic operations and everything works splendidly including the VU meter illumination.   Play, Record, Fast Forward & Rewind functions run smooth and noiseless.   AKAI 4000DB - (1975/1976)   The 4000DB  is also  the succesor of the 4000D and has an additional sound-on-sound function.. It also has a tape selector switch. Although the heads remained the same, a higher frequency range was achieved again, probably by using silicon semi- conductors.      The 4000DB is almost like the 4000DS. Like its model number implies, Dolby encode and decode sets are present here which achieved a better signal to noise ratio. Akai also dropped the rubber reel retainers here in favour of the built-in reel lockers.
