This model operates on two tape speeds: 7-1/2 ips and 3-3/4 ips. The Tape Speed is determined by the size of the capstam. For 3-3/4 ips, unscrew capstam cap by turning it counterclockwise and remove the outer capstam. For the 7-1/2 ips, use the outer capstam. See the capstam in my pictures. It is located in the center of device close the pinch roller. We tested this AKAI 4000DS MKII = FANTASTIC !!!!Has a wonderful and pure SOUND !!!! EXCELLENT WORKING CONDITION AND PRETTY APPEARANCE NO VISUAL  SCRATCHES IN THE FACEPLATE  !!!!! Wood cabinet in  EXCELLENT condition. It was slightly dented in the below corner, but it was remodelled and  varnished.
