McIntosh MR77 Vintage Audiophile FM Stereo Tuner MR-77 McIntosh MR77 Auction Consists of : McIntosh MR77 FM Stereo Tuner Original Owner’s Manual Original Service Manual (partial) >“If good enough will do, there are at least 100 answers for you. But if the best is what you need then there is only one real answer--McIntosh”. In today’s ultra competitive money driven business world many companies compromise quality for profit margins, this statement is especially true in the audio component industry. They figure most people sparsely use an audio component for a couple of years then replace it. Lets face their goal is to get a few hundred bucks from us every couple of years, they could care less about what happens to their products after they are sold. McIntosh Labs is the complete opposite of this ideology; they create an audio component with the idea that this is something that you will cherish the rest of your life. This is not just a groundless claim; the fact is 80% of the McIntosh components produced since 1949 are still in use today, no other audio component manufacture can make this claim. The exceptional longevity of McIntosh products owes to a design philosophy established with the very first McIntosh amp: that every component will be created with capacity so great that it will never be operated at or near its stress point. From the initial design process all the way to the shipping department, they take painstaking efforts to ensure that every McIntosh component is “perfect”. Since the late 40’s this rare philosophy has been the driving force behind this exemplary company and it has certainly been the reason why so many people love McIntosh components. The MR-77 was introduced in 1970 with a long and successful 8 year production run. When it was first released it set the new standard for low distortion reception, a level which is still astonishing 38 years later. The MR77 was the first creation of legendary designer Richard Modafferi for McIntosh and it was the first tuner to contain his 8 Pole RIMO filter as well as the then newly developed, Linear-Phase Bridge Discriminator. All too often the MR77 gets overshadowed by the popularity of its successor, the MR78, although it is a truly marvelous tuner in its own right. Some say the MR77 is an all around better sounding tuner than the MR78, that is debatable, although I think most would agree that the MR77 definitely gives the MR78 a run for the title of McIntosh’s best solid-state tuner. The MR77 has an unprecedented naturalness, a large soundstage, and unlike most solid state tuners it is truly musical. With strong reception it sonically displays excellent separation of instruments and it reveals delicate sonic details accurately, it makes you forget you are listing to the FM band. The MR77 does have a wider frequency response and less of a phase shift compared to the MR78, if you are not too enamored with IF selectivity switch the 78 offers, the MR77 may be a better choice. Some features of the MR77 include LINEAR PHASE IF RIMO FILTER Even since the beginning of FM, research engineers have realized that constant delay, or linear phase, IF filters were necessary for low distortion reception. Crude approximations to constant delay have always been used in FM tuners — with disappointing results. So-Called "Butterworth" or "Legandre" filters offer only a fair compromise with respect to delay error. Crystal and ceramic filters, usually based on the "Chebychev" model, work fairly well and give good selectivity, but none of these are constant delay (linear-phase) filters. Commercial tuners using these filters can show 5% stereo IM distortion at 100% modulation, and have delay errors up to 100%. In sharp contrast, the Rimo linear phase filter allows a tuner to show only .1% IM distortion at 100% modulation and has a delay error of only 1.2% in the useful bandpass. In its useful bandpass, it is a true mathematical approximation to linear-phase — the world's finest selective, linear-phase, minimum-phase shift filter LINEAR PHASE BRIDGE DISCRIMINATOR The linear phase Rimo filter would be useless if it had to work into an ordinary FM detector. Thus a new detector with suitably low distortion was specifically developed for the MR77. A search of the available literature revealed a little-known bridge circuit with a theoretical distortion of zero! However, designing a practical working circuit for a commercially feasible stereo tuner took some doing. Distortion performance of the bridge detector is close to the theoretical zero. In addition to its excellent distortion performance, the bridge detector also exhibits capture ratio close to 0 dB. The linear-phase bridge discriminator uses a balanced transmission line bridge in conjunction with a differential voltage-doubling rectifier to achieve 99.9% accuracy demodulation of FM signals. The only adjustments in the MR 77 detector are two simple variable resistors. These resistors center the tuning meter and set the transistor bias. Complex tuning for minimum distortion is not needed. Fixed & Controlled Outputs The left-hand pair of AUDIO OUTPUT jacks provides FIXED OUTPUT audio signals. The program at these jacks is unaffected by the MR 77 front panel VOLUME control. Use these output jacks to connect the tuner to a stereo control preamplifier which has its own master volume control. The right hand pair of AUDIO OUTPUT jacks, provides FRONT PANEL CONTROLLED audio signal. The program at these jacks is controlled by the MR 77 front panel VOLUME control. Use these output jacks to connect to external power amplifier, tape recorders, or any equipment which requires continuous front panel control of tuner output volume. Four Indicators There are four indicators on the MR 77 dial panel. They are: STEREO indicator, MULTIPATH indicator, SIGNAL STRENGTH meter, and the TUNING meter. Three Operating Conditions FM-MONO — In this position all broadcasts will be heard monophonically. This position bypasses the automatic stereo switching. The stereo indicator will still light when a station is transmitting stereo, but the program heard from the loudspeakers will be mono.AUTO: — The FM position provides monophonic FM or FM stereo at the left and right channel audio output jacks automatically. With the MODE SELECTOR in the FM position a station broadcasting a monophonic program will be heard in mono. When the station switches to stereo broadcast, or the tuner is changed to a stereo station, the stereo indicator will light and the MR 77 will automatically switch to stereo operation. If mono broadcasting is resumed the MR 77 will automatically switch to mono.STEREO: — Only stations broadcasting stereo can be heard in this position. All monophonic stations and background noises are suppressed. The TUNING meter and SIGNAL STRENGTH meter function normally. Stereo Filter The STEREO FILTER reduces noise on weak stereo stations. FM Muting Muting suppresses the background noise and hiss normally heard between stations. Turn the control to either LOCAL or DISTANT position for muting. Weak stations that may not override noise and interference are also suppressed by the muting. In the AC OUT position, the muting is turned off. This allows conventional FM tuning with the noise and interference present. And Much More! I tested it and it sounds great. Stations are delivered clearly and overall sound quality is excellent. The meters are working and all lights are operating with the exception of the stereo indicator beckon. This lamp is readily available and easy to replace. The tuning knob is not operating the tuning mechanism. It seems one of the tuner strings is missing. This missing tuner string should be easy to find. The service manual has a stringing diagram, so you should not have a problem. I have been manually tuning the stations to test the tuner. Cosmetically the tuner shows ware. There are some paint ware marks and scratches variously located. Faceplate has some bubbling. There is a tiny amount of rust evident to upon close inspection of the chrome. The manuals show ware. The service manual is missing the cover & rear page.
