Description
I bought this amp new loved it. I had the mod done at the factory to accept EL34's and other tubes. Short story there is the amp sounded great as most reviewers agreed, but ran hotter than Mesa designed it to run with the stock 5881's.. The amp eventually had a capacitor fail and I could see the heat problem. So I hired a local amp gury, Jonathan Glynn at Mill Hill Audio to solve the overheating problem. He rebuilt and upgraded the entire signal path with superior components, vented the chasis and modified the sockets so the amp runs a pair of EL34's with a quartet of 5881's on each side. It is a nice balance to running the amp with all of one power tube type. The cost of the upgrades was outrageous because of the labor involved to completely disassemble the amp. I spent more on the upgrades than the amp cost new. Tubes are very low hours. I purchased them from a local tube expert. Svetlana winged C power tubes and very rare 1958 Maza 12AX7 preamp tubes. Amp sounds amazing. You will not be disappointed. Works best with a passive preamp. I used it with a Mod Squad (McCormack) Line Drive and that was my fav. Will power just about any speaker out there. I have original packaging from Mesa. Amp weighs more than 80lbs, so shipping gets expensive.
