In 1962, I made an employee purchase of a Model 654M FM Multiplex Tuner/Amplifier. This is a one-of-a-kind Engineering Sample that was fine tuned to the nenth degree. All tubes are original and the output tubes (7591s) are closely matched. The Model 654M was the premier FM Receiver of the time with a high-power amplifier. It was one of the first FM stereo receivers with the built-in multiplex circuitry; earlier receivers had to add a separate multiplex adapter with external cables. The back end of this unit is the stereo amplifier with 7591 octal output tubes (also note the big output transformers). In addition to the amplifier, this unit also contains the stereo preamplifier, FM tuner and built-in multiplex circuitry that provides FM stereo reception. Also featured are output connections for a center speaker channel, which when added to the left and right speakers, provides what Pilot called the “Curtain of Sound.” Complete with gold-anodized brass faceplate and gold knobs. There is a gold screw in the upper left-hand corner of the faceplate as this was an engineering sample. This is my personal equipment that I used sparingly for the last 45 years and is still in perfect condition. Here is a great opportunity to own a one-of-a-kind true classic. This unit is one of the last all-tube models to be manufactured at the Long Island City location.
